Best fit: apartment blocks, housing estates, hotels and commercial buildings where mains pressure does not reach the upper floors, and any installation that needs steady, uninterrupted water pressure.

A booster set raises water from your tank or from the mains to the pressure the installation actually needs. Pump, diaphragm pressure vessel, control panel and safety equipment are assembled on a single skid and connect to the system at one point.

Pressure is calculated, not guessed. Roughly every 10 metres of height equals about 1 bar of static pressure; pipe friction losses and the outlet pressure wanted at the highest tap are added on top. Flow comes from a simultaneity calculation: not every tap in the building runs at once, so simultaneous demand is used rather than the sum of all fixtures. An undersized set cannot deliver pressure, while an oversized one cycles on and off, wasting both energy and motor life.

Variable speed (inverter driven) sets change pump speed with demand and hold the pressure steady. The result is no pressure swing in the shower, far fewer starts and clearly lower consumption at part load. In multi-pump sets the pumps stage in one after another, so a single failure does not leave the building without water.

Most faults start on the suction side. Drawing from a break tank rather than directly from the mains is the usual practice; the suction line must be short, correctly sized and free of air traps. Poor suction conditions cause cavitation: noisy running, impeller wear and falling efficiency. Dry running protection is what saves the motor when the tank empties.

How to Choose

  • Flow: taken from a simultaneity calculation, not from the total of every fixture.
  • Head: static height plus pipe losses plus the outlet pressure required on the top floor.
  • Control type: fixed speed or inverter driven. Buildings with swinging demand favour inverter control.
  • Suction conditions: tank or mains; line diameter and length decide the cavitation risk.
  • Redundancy: where downtime is unacceptable, plan a multi-pump set with a standby pump.
  • Installation: vibration isolation, noise, service space and power supply are settled up front.
