A radiant heater does not heat the air; it warms people, floors and machinery directly by radiation. In high-ceilinged spaces, warm air collecting under the roof while the working zone stays cold is a well known problem; radiant heating bypasses this stratification and carries the energy straight to the surfaces in use.
The practical consequence is a different heating strategy. Instead of bringing the whole volume to a given air temperature, only the occupied zones are heated; because radiation raises the perceived temperature, the air temperature can be kept lower. The difference becomes obvious where doors open frequently, ceilings are high, or part of the volume stays empty.
Layout is more decisive than the choice of unit. Mounting height, the beam spread of the unit and its tilt angle are considered together; obstacles such as racking, crane beams and mezzanine platforms shade the radiation and leave unheated pockets. Units are usually not concentrated in one place but distributed so that they face the work stations.
The combustion air and flue arrangement cannot be neglected. For unflued types the ventilation of the space is a requirement defined by the rules; for flued types the discharge route has to be sized correctly. In areas with combustible dust, solvent vapour or heavy oil mist, the use of radiant heaters is assessed separately.

- Ceiling height and mounting possibilities — unit type and mounting height are chosen together so that the radiation stays within comfort limits
- Shape of the zone to be heated: a narrow long line, or scattered work stations — beam spread and the number of units change accordingly
- Structural elements and racking that cause shading; every obstacle in front of the radiation creates an unheated pocket
- Ventilation arrangement of the space and the source of combustion air; the flued or unflued decision comes from here
- Operating regime: continuous or shift based, how often the doors open — the control scenario and the number of zones are built on this regime
